project overview
This timeline poster visually represents the evolution of ladies' hairstyles over the last 100 years. By illustrating key hair trends from each decade, I explored the societal and cultural shifts that influenced the way women styled their hair. The piece examines how something as simple as hairstyle can shape personal identity and reflect the changing values of different time periods.
Research & Development
Initial research began with analysing historical references and fashion trends from the 1920s to the 2010s. I hand-sketched early concepts to map out the iconic hairstyles of each decade, ensuring historical accuracy while refining the visual style. From the iconic finger waves of the 1920s to the voluminous curls of the 1980s, each sketch was carefully developed to highlight unique details.
These sketches were then digitised using Adobe Illustrator, where I created a consistent illustration style to unify the timeline. The final design maintains clarity and visual impact, making it suitable for both print and digital formats.
Design execution
The final poster was produced in full colour, emphasising the contrast between each decade’s trends. By using varied line weights and textures in the illustrations, I was able to convey the texture and movement of the different hairstyles, bringing the designs to life. The project was printed on high-quality paper to maintain vibrant colours and sharp detail, providing a striking visual.
